IMG_3179.JPG23 viewsLooking north, northwest from the saddle, back toward he lake basin west of Snowyside Peak. It looks like a lot of boulder hopping, but by following the grassy areas up from the lake basin almost to the highest trees, then continuing more or less in about the middle right of the photo, it went surprisingly fast, and was not bad. We stayed higher on the moraine, west, of the lower drainage, even though there was some snow.

IMG_3248.JPG23 viewsThis formation on the north side of the Pettit Lake drainage is conspicuous several miles before reaching Pettit Lake. It looks more like the El Capitan in Yosemite, than does the El Capitan looming above Alice Lake on the opposite side of the drainage, a mile or so south, southwest.

DSCF0248.JPG23 viewsMost of the smoke and haze has cleared out by morning in Iron Basin. I crossed a small stream with running water about 7:30 last night at around 8700’ and decided to camp, uncertain about availability of water ahead. I had entertained thoughts of pushing on to Ocalkens Lake, but that was just not going to happen. I made the right decision. I’ve found it makes more sense to stop a bit earlier, and get started earlier in the morning.
