IMG_3421.JPG21 viewsTo the east, northeast far below is the "unnamed lake" at roughly 9000' where we stood 4 years earlier on our 2nd hike together, contemplating what the summit, thinking we might have tried for it had we started an hour earlier. On Labor Day 3 years ago, we descended the Williams/Thompson saddle to that same lake after running short on daylight, and abandoning a summit attempt (see gallery).Sep 18, 2013

IMG_3426.JPG19 viewsStanley can be on the valley floor, just above the long east ridge. The aluminum box containing the summit register was huge! It reminded me of a geo-cache, as it contained such items as a lighter, and a dime to phone home.Sep 18, 2013

IMG_3418.JPG23 viewsThe professor makes an entry in the summit register on the west summit of Thompson Peak. We arrived here after first climbing the pinnacle just to the west, which was slightly lower, more exposed, and quite a bit more cramped on top. Both have couloirs leading to a notch, with a short scramble on solid rock to reach the top.Sep 18, 2013

IMG_3415.JPG23 viewsLooking toward Thompson Peak from the Thompson/Mickeys Spire Saddle, it is difficult to pick out the summit. We decided it was the pinnacle on the left; it looks higher, and has a shape closer to that of Thompson as viewed from Goat Lake.Sep 18, 2013

IMG_3410.JPG20 viewsJust before 10 am, the professor checks the route description on the Thompson/Mickeys Spire Saddle. Castle Peak, 11,815', the highest peak in the White Cloud Mountains can be seen on the skyline about 1/3 from the left edge of photo.Sep 18, 2013
