IMG_7127.JPG2 viewsPeak 10906', 0.5 mi SW of Patterson Peak, catches the first rays of morning light above my camp high in Four Lakes Basin. The north face of Castle Peak is seen again beyond the ridge.

IMG_7129.JPG3 viewsThe morning light on the peak is reflected in the lake adjacent to my camp.

IMG_7132.JPG1 viewsThe north face of Castle Peak rising over the ridge beyond Rock Lake in Four Lakes Basin. I fish several of the lakes in this basin, but only very small trout seem to be interested in the flies I cast.

IMG_7138.JPG1 viewsI have better luck at the larger of the Born Lakes, at 9555'.

IMG_7139.JPG2 viewsI carry out this brook trout, double-bagged, rolled up in my Ridge-Rest pad to keep it cool.

IMG_7144.JPG1 viewsThe view southeast from the trail just west of Born Lakes. This may be another route to the broad plateau between Born Lakes and Four Lakes Basin. The route I took, just below the highest of the Born Lakes seems easier.

IMG_7147.JPG1 viewsThe constant play of shadows over the white limestone of D. O. Lee Peak from the trail just east of Ants Basin.

IMG_7148.JPG2 views30 minutes later, I am on top of the divide west of Ants Basin; all downhill from here. The view northwest to the peaks rising above Strawberry Basin.

IMG_7150.JPG2 viewsThe "large gray pinnacle on a fractured ridge guards a notch called the Devil's Staircase," above the highest of the Born Lakes from the divide west of Ants Basin.

IMG_7153.JPG2 viewsIn the upper center, the broad plateau between Born Lakes and Four Lakes Basin as seen from the divide west of Ants Basin. I hang around waiting for a large shadow to reveal D. O. Lee Peak, but it stubbornly stays put. The final few miles seem to take forever. I walk out with food that should have been eaten.
